![]() I think the combo, although more portable than the head+cab, with its 10" speaker and small cab would need more EQ and perhaps sound "small". 1 Does anyone know if it does at gig volumes (with single coils)? If not, would a 6-band EQ pedal, increasing the 100Hz band, work? For gigs, I play in a duo - at a lower volume than a full band would. I didn't try it in 15w mode, so I don't know if would be ok at gig volumes. I tried a Rocker 15 head through the same cab, and at home volume (0.5w mode) it didn't have enough low end with my guitars (both single coil). It's slightly better with an overdrive pedal, but I play clean 80% of the time. I have an Orange Terror Stamp, played through a 1x12 with a Celestion Greenback, and although it has enough low end at both home and rehearsal, it sounds "scratchy" when played clean. Apols, meant the AC30 Head, which also attenuates. Again at 15 Watts setting the Gain and Master at 12 o'clock works for me.īut. The Gain (Dirty) channel does need careful EQ'ing to suit different environments. It take pedals (OD to Fuzz) formidably well, my preference here is a BD-2 and a Big Muff. The Clean (Natural) channel at 15W just keeps getting louder, I've never had it past 12 o'clock and, indeed, prefer it at 7 watts full on around 3 o'clock. I've always got a mic etc, if there's a PA to use above our's which'll only really copes with vocals. think a typical (100-150sqm) village/community hall type place. we only play occasionally and invariably to small venues/crowds. it doesn't soften at all, so it's super easy to boost it to an ear piercing sound with too much presence. But it becomes an option for more clean volume. it's almost annoying compared to the dirty channel. You can hit it with a clean boost and it will increase in volume much more than you think and not distort. The natural channel on the Orange ends up being extremely extremely dynamic as a result, that channel has a ton of headroom for boosting. Less than the Princeton, even though everyone would associate the Princeton as a much cleaner amp. it seems to have very little pre-amp distortion. The other thing is the natural channel only uses 1 preamp tube. my Princeton has a rolled off top end/chime compared to the Orange, but the Doheny can easily do the scratchy thing on the Princeton as well. it's a balancing act, I think you do want the pickups adjusted to the point you can get a bright guitar bright when you need it to cut through. ![]() a lot of that is adjusting the pickups just right so you have just a hint of scratchy/ice-picky if the tone & volume are at 10 on the guitar and then you can easily dial it out at the tone knob. the Tele I had and the G&L Doheny (Jazzmaster style) I have right now can both get scratchy sounds. If you don't do this you're always going to end up feeling like your single coil guitars are too bright as the volume goes up and the humbucker guitars are too dark as the volume go up.Īdjusting my pickups this way has also had the bonus that when I take the same guitars over to my Princeton I don't need to readjust the amp EQ much if at all between the two guitars. Then it becomes very easy to get the same guitars to sound good on the dirty channel of the amp or on your other amps. ![]() ![]() What I've found the trick to be is to adjust each guitar's pickups to work best with that natural channel. I have had an EQ pedal to use with it in the past, but I don't like to use one. Overall I'd say the Rocker is louder than the Princeton. If you were going with the Rocker 15 Terror and a 1x12 I'd go with a high efficiency speaker if you want clean volume & lots of bass and them maximize the power setting you're using. My Princeton has a 97db Efficiency rated Celestion, the Rocker 15 has the 101db efficiency "Voice of the World Gold" which is also supposedly a Celestion that's rebranded. Right now the other amp I have is a 1x12 65 PRRI. it has less sag than say Fender amps, so the bass is more present and in your face. I think the Rocker 15 gives the appearance of tighter bass & more bass than you'd expect because it has a fast attack. It will growl by noon on the volume knob if you hit humbuckers hard. But with humbuckers you need to keep that dial lower. By the time you get to noon it is compressing and pushing the midrange on a single coil guitar in a way that makes them seem less bright, but still clean. It's very sparkly clean up to about 9-10 for me with single coils. For clean you want to start at max power and bring the volume on the natural channel up only as much as you need to. You absolutely want it on 15w if you're playing with others at a rehearsal volume. I've had the Rocker 15 Combo for about 5 years now and have used it with a bunch of guitars.īass & Treble both seem to come up as you increase the power levels.
